Under general direction of the Chief Marine Engineer (CME) or other superior officer, operates the main propulsion equipment and auxiliaries of a diesel or diesel-electric powered ferry boat; ensures compliance with agency standard operating procedures, standing orders and applicable local, state and federal rules and regulations; performs related work. EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL TASKS: The Yard Crew Marine Engineer will report to the Deputy Director of Ferry Maintenance (DDFM) and work closely with the Yard Crew Supervisor. His or her main duty will to be to assist the DDFM in the tracking and completion of the boat crew preventative maintenance work orders. During shakedown of out of service vessels he or she will assume the position of Marine Engineer on the boat. The Yard Crew Marine Engineer will become familiar with the Maximo maintenance program, so that he or she may assist the DDFM with administrative duties. Duties & Responsibilities: 1) Perform duties of Marine Engineer as specified in OPS guide. 2) Assist Yard Crew Supervisor in the performance of USCG & ABS pre-inspections and in the completion of regulatory inspections performed on out of service boats. 3) Act as Yard Crew Supervisor when needed. 4) Assist trades in the operation of equipment during maintenance of out of service boats. 5) Perform preventative maintenance work items on out of service boats. 6) On monthly basis, check on outstanding engine room crew preventive maintenance work orders of operating boats and complete as needed. 7) Assist the DDFM with administrative duties as needed. Examples include entering, tracking, and updating work orders in Maximo and assisting the DDFM with researching and tracking parts and materials requirements. 8) Travel to shipyard to perform equipment start-ups on boats in drydock as needed. 9) Additional duties as directed by the DDFM and the Director of Engineering. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION MMC REQUIREMENT: Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with endorsement and medical certificate must be maintained for the duration of employment. TWIC REQUIREMENT: At the time of appointment, candidates must possess a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA). A valid TWIC must be maintained for the duration of employment. MEDICAL/DRUG TESTING REQUIREMENTS: Medical guidelines established by the U.S. Coast Guard apply to the position of Marine Engineer. Candidates will therefore be required to undergo a medical examination prior to appointment and thereafter, pursuant to Coast Guard regulations. Candidates must also pass a drug screening to be appointed. Marine engineers are subject to random drug and alcohol testing during their employment.
